Welcome Back.

We trust everyone is safe, happy and well. 2014 has kicked off well and we are looking forward to a good year. Quite a few things have been happening since we last blogged. Alternate Solutions have delved into selling men’s clothing line “Old Guys Rule” t-shirts, hats, key rings, stubbie coolers etc. Our web people are working on displaying products on our web site, so that should be up shortly with pictures and pricing. In the meantime…if you have a look and like our facebook page – you will be able to see some of our merchandise for sale.  Terrific men’s gift line, birthdays, anniversaries, Father’s Day, not forgetting Valentines Day this coming Friday.
We were really thrilled to get an email from Dave in Glen Innes this morning. Dave rescued and old engine, off a farm – headed for the scrap yard. He was restoring it and  struggling a little to get it running perfectly on gas – he phoned Andy for some technical advice and was so grateful for Andrew’s assistance. Dave sent us a lovely thank you email with these two terrific photo’s. It was our pleasure to be of assistance to you Dave – the photo’s are a real testament to what can be achieved with time, patience and skill – it’s a credit to you.

Odd Customer Enquiry…

Interesting request from a potential client…

Had a request from a customer working in a chicken processing plant.  Apparently one way to process live chickens (humanely) is via a conveyor belt into a chamber, where the chickens are euthanized  using argon gas.  The client wanted to know  exactly what volume of gas suppressed the oxygen enough to euthanize the chickens.  What we promote is air quality, so this was pretty much the opposite of what we try to achieve!   They were looking for us to supply a gas detector that would alarm when gas level reached a certain point , with a view to being effective and also not over using/wasting Argon gas.  After that, then of course an air quality detector confirming it was safe for staff to re-enter chamber.  A little bit of a challenge, but yes…it can be done!  And just in case you are wondering “is gassing the chicken safe for human consumption?” I’m led to believe yes.

Petrol Fumes Kill

Do you have a Gas Detector for your home or business?

Further to my brief Alternate Solutions Group facebook post:  Was talking to someone today about a baker that used a generator inside his bakery during a power outage to run his equipment.  Sadly the man was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes and died.

I Really, really want to drive home the hazards of using petrol powered equipment in confined spaces – have attached story/ link at end of this blog.  If you must use a petrol driven tool in a confined space – ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventillation, use an extractor fan to expell exhaust fumes and a gas detector/air quality alarm to warn of any potential danger.   Petrol fumes can kill  –  always remember…”Safety First”

THE VOICE

TV program THE VOICE might seem an odd introduction to our blog (my first) however…after watching the lovely Viva Lale perform on Sunday night’s show as a tribute and to honor her 6 family members lost in Queensland’s worst ever house fire – reminds us of the hazards that can be associated with using gas.  11 lives were lost, 4 gas bottles believed to have caused the fire. Also in the paper this past week Matt Golinski, back on the cooking circuit, after recovering from burn injuries sustained in his own house fire (gas related), sadly where the lives of his wife and daughters were lost.  Now might be a timely reminder to inspect your gas bottles for any deterioration/leakage.  In the event of a gas leak inside a confined space, it is imperative to remove all people from house/complex and ventilate the area.  Under no circumstances do anything that may ignite fumes, remove yourself from the room and contact fire authority if necessary.  A gas detector unit is to gas as a fire alarm is to fire.  $150 outlay for a gas detector is little cost for peace of mind.

ps.  On a personal note: I think the judges made an error not to chose Viva – she has a wonderful voice and I believe with coaching, she could have stepped up and won the competition.  Wishing there was a wild card and she might get a second chance?  Good luck to her for the future.

Air Conditioning Refrigerant Gases

With the dramatic price increase in the tradition “CFC” type refrigerant gases, many from within the refrigeration industry , whether it be cars /trucks , earthmoving equipment etc or commercial & household applications are now using “hydrocarbon” based refrigerant. It is being claimed to be colder and above all else more cost effective. The down side is that because its Hydrocarbon based it is extremely flammable.

With safety in mind a reliable Gas Safety detectors are a must .None of us want any staff members to be in any danger. Work Place Health and Safety officers can also issue on the spots fines if adequate equipment is not available.

What can happen?

  • Personal or property injury (or death) due to an undetected leak.
  • Fine and Jail term.
  • Solution to the problem?
  • A simple to use Gas detector with the ability to be positioned in various locations.

Have a Gas Detector already?

  • Does it cover Hydrocarbon based gases and does it react to the require LOL standard?
  •  What are the ongoing calibration costs and can the sensitivity be easily adjusted?

Alternate Solutions Group supplies Quality Australian made Peel Safety Gas detectors. Our Portable detector range comes in a variety of formats and can be easily used with minimal training . The units have already been in continuous use for over 30 years proving to be both reliable and robust.

Should any issues arrive, service and parts are available locally, providing fast and efficient after sales support.

Golinski Family Tragedy : 3 Fatalities

All of these events happened in the night time while the occupants of the house were sleeping.

Most people do not have the slightest idea of how dangerous Combustible Gas and
Carbon Monoxide can be if it is not handled with care.

The simple installation of a domestic gas detector could have prevented both of these tragedies.
A gas detector will promptly detect a gas leak and an audible alarm will sound alerting occupants to the danger– similar as smoke to a fire alarm.

If you smell gas in your home

Vacate occupants of house immediately and if it is safe to do so:

  • Turn off the gas at your gas meter or cylinder
  • Turn off all appliances (including electrical) and pilot lights
  • Open all doors and windows for ventilation
  • Extinguish all naked flames (do not smoke)

Contact emergency authority in your state.
